Lost some Donkeys?

By Pst.Sam Ithiga

Now the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost. 1 Samuel 9:3

1 Samuel Chapter 9 is a fascinating story of how the Lord orchestrated tragedy in the life of Saul so as to set him up for his blessing. His Father’s donkeys got lost and he sent him to look for them. Please note that in their economy, donkeys were really treasured. This was a very important mission as the family business depended on it. But the search bore no fruit and Saul was left feeling frustrated and ready to give up. At the time he must have thought “why has this misfortune befallen us?” or “why me?”, “why am I so unlucky?”. Of course we do not know what he really thought, this is just conjecture, but we do go through moments ourselves when we think God has either forgotten us or just does not care about our difficult situation.

Yet today’s story is a reminder that in the grand scheme of things, everything works together for good for them that love God and are called according to His purpose. Mark these words; “God has a plan” and “God is working”. Consider this, He caused Saul’s donkeys to get lost on the one side and then told Samuel the prophet to expect a young man to come to him to be anointed as King on the other side. He didn’t give the full picture to both parties. All that was needed was trust.

Believer, learn from this that God could choose a series of misfortunes to be the path that will lead to the blessing. How unpopular is that truth? His progression doesn’t have to follow the order of good – better – best. It could go from bad – worse – amazing!

God cared about Saul, but he still engineered the loss of his donkeys so as to set him up with a big favour ahead. Still, He allowed him to be frustrated with a search that bore no fruit. The story of Joseph also follows the same progression. Need I say more? Why God sometimes works this way, we don’t know.

Child of God, you may be in the deep waters right now. That is not evidence of God’s absence. Who knows, these very waters that threaten to drown you now, may be the currents that will carry you to your destiny. The rains that beat you now may be the showers of blessings that you have been praying for. Hold on! Trust God with all your heart. Though you are disillusioned at this time, pray that He will give you heaven’s perspective through which to look at your situation. Remember, He has a plan and He is working it out.

Prayer: God I may have lost my donkeys (insert your issue here) but I know you are still in control. Help me to keep on going without giving up hope because though I do not see any good right now, I can trust in your goodness. In your goodness you caused the death of Christ to bring me eternal life. If you could do that impossible thing, surely you can handle this issue. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

This has blessed my heart especially in knowing that all things will work out in the end. And if they haven’t yet, it isn’t the end. He does have the final say. Asante sana passie
